Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS)

Airborne Laser Scannig (ALS) generally known as Airborne LiDAR. Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) is an active laser system of scanning and capturing high-resolution digital spatial data that can be used for surveying and geospatial applications. Airborne LiDAR is installed laser scanner on a collection vehicle for example helicopter, fixed wing aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) and drones for collecting data.

LiDAR, primarily used in airborne laser mapping applications, is emerging as a cost-effective alternative to traditional surveying technique such as aerial photogrammetry. To be clear, the accuracy of LiDAR it is not more precise than a traditional survey using a distance meter and a total station, but it is less prone to errors.

Nowadays, Mobile Laser Scanning (MLS) has become an established surveying method. The general principles of operation are the same for Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) and Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS). Unlike Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS), which performed from Airborne, Mobile Laser Scanning (MLS) collects geospatial data from a mobile vehicle fitted with LiDAR Sensor, Cameras, GPS and other remote sensors.
